Our 3 Step Approach to Instagram Scheduling

 
 

Over the last few weeks we've been sharing tips and tricks for Instagram, and explaining what has been working well for us. We talked about how using categories helped us get organized, and the apps we use on a weekly (if not daily) basis. All of this in ramp up for our October Salty Series event, which is all about social media and community building! Until then though, we're going to dig into how we tie everything, with our 3 step approach to scheduling for Instagram (and other social media platforms).

STEP 1: REVIEW THE WEEK AHEAD

The first thing to consider is what real world events are coming up. Do you have any blog posts coming out this week, anything you want to promote, and events or activities? What's going on in the world that you need to talk about?

Once you've had a look at the week ahead, you can put together a list of the topics you'll need to cover. If you haven't got a weeks worth of topics, think about what else you could add in.

STEP 2: MATCH CONTENT AND PLAN THE WEEK

With your list of 5-7 topics, you can now begin pulling content together. This might be a mixture of your own photos, design work, or stock photos.

Now the next step is where we spend most of our time. You'll notice on our feed that we share a mixture of photos and graphics. The graphics are a combination of white background design pieces, and pink quotes. We aim to share at least 1 of each every week, and mix them amongst the photos to create a nice flow.

To do this, we take our collection of images, and figure out what order is best in to keep our feed looking pretty. We try to avoid having the graphics and quotes blocking together, so we use Mosaico to help us plan out our week. And yes, we do realize that this is quite an intense step for some people. It might not be necessary for you to map our week visually like we do, but it works best for us.

 

STEP 3: USE A SCHEDULING SERVICE TO STAY ORGANIZED

The easiest part of the job is now scheduling it all out! We use Hootsuite for this so that we don't have to think about captions on the fly. Plus, we like to post daily on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, and Hoosuite helps us do that!

Our day to day social tasks can then be actually talking to people and enjoying the apps. We get to spend more time having conversations, and focusing on engagement, which is always a win. We definitely recommend finding a process like this that works for you.
